What will my first session be like with you?
Your first session is where we start building our therapeutic alliance. I will ask you what brings you to therapy and a series of intake questions that consist of general information I need to know to understand your life and experiences.
We will talk about your hopes for therapy, your therapy goals for yourself, and how you would like to see yourself improve in therapy.
I will also inform you of my practice policies and what you can expect from me as your counselor. We will also go over consent for therapy as well as confidentiality. You will have time in the session to ask me questions you have about me or the therapy process.
I feel that I am self-conscious about everything! What is Sophia self-conscious about?
Believe it or not, sometimes I get self-conscious about my voice! People tell me that my voice is very soothing (comes in handy as a therapist or when I record my meditation recordings to give my clients), but I feel like I sound very young when I hear it over the phone.
As a woman who has been married for 11 years and has three kids, I can never get over how funny it is when somebody comes to my door and asks me if my parents are home. As I get older, this has become more flattering, but I felt very self-conscious during my younger days, especially when trying to get people to take me seriously!
What is a typical day like for you?
The mornings and afternoons are usually full of helping my kiddos through distance learning (Again, Thanks, COVID!), playdates, meal preps while trying my best to shape them into wonderful human beings.
But the afternoons and evenings are when I get to sit down with my favorite clients! Being in mom mode is extremely satisfying, but I also feel a rush of invigoration when I sit down with clients and be present in their lives and what they are experiencing.
What are your favorite quotes pertaining to therapy?
Oh, I love therapy quotes! Here is a shortlist of some of my favorites from Audrey Hepburn (LOVE HER!)
“The most beautiful view comes after the hardest climb.”
“Emotions are like waves, you can’t stop them from coming but you can choose which ones to surf.”
“The work you do today determines what you will be tomorrow.”
“Nothing is Impossible; the word itself says ‘I’m Possible!’”
Here are a couple of others.
“You are not broken. You are breaking through.” – Alex Myles
“It’s not about finding your voice, it’s about giving yourself permission to use your voice.” – Kris Carr
How have you coped with the pandemic?
Like many others, the pandemic was a scary roller coaster for myself and my family. Luckily, I got to see my clients via teletherapy, so I still felt connected with my clients, helping to create some normalcy for me.
We also ended up getting a pet bird a couple of weeks into the pandemic as a pleasant distraction that helped. Our bird is the chillest bird we know, which is why we named him “Chilly.” He talks, is hand-tamed, and loves to play fetch and “hide and seek” with us! (I swear, our bird thinks he is a dog.)
What also helped curb my COVID anxiety was engaging in art. I taught myself how to paint and do clay art. When you schedule a teletherapy session with me, you can see my artwork on display in the background. I am by no means a natural, but I feel proud of myself for using art to cope with the turbulent times of the pandemic.
I also encourage my clients to dive into art to experience the confidence of creating something with their hands and experience the therapeutic benefits of art therapy. I will often bring paint into my therapy sessions and LOVE having my clients paint while in therapy. Many will comment on how relaxed and freeing it feels to create something while doing meaningful work in therapy.
