Anxiety

“Talk therapy turns hysterical misery to mundane happiness.”
– Sigmund Freud

Doom and gloom rule your life.

You feel life is passing you by because you cannot be present at the moment.

Something good happens to you. Instead of being happy and grateful, you have this looming thought that something terrible is about to happen.

You live your life looking around and waiting for the other shoe to drop.

You have trouble going to sleep at night because concerning thoughts keep consuming you. You look over at the clock and see that it is already 3 AM, and you must be at work by 8 AM. You wonder how you will get through the day with only four hours of sleep – already dreading the day before it starts.

Feelings of dread have physical consequences.

You notice that your hands and legs feel wobbly during times of nervousness or feeling overwhelmed.

There is a heaviness in your chest, making you feel as if you can’t take a deep breath. You feel you are suffocating in doubt and anxiety, and all you want to do is breathe again.

You wish that the constant racing thoughts, overthinking, and second-guessing yourself will stop.

You have tried to make the pain stop by turning to unhealthy habits such as overeating, sex, substance use, relationships, overworking, and avoidance. Engaging in these activities helps you numb the pain for a short while, but you feel worse about yourself in the end.

Self-isolation doesn’t ease the way you feel.

You notice that sometimes the world feels so overwhelming that all you want to do is stay home and watch Netflix all day.

All your friends are asking you to hang out. Still, you politely decline the invitation and make up some excuse, fully knowing that the reason you are not going out is that you are emotionally exhausted from negative thoughts that prevent you from enjoying life.

You do not want your friends and family to know, so you keep your anxiety a secret, fully knowing that eventually, the cat will be out of the bag.

You don’t have to live this way!

Together, we can make your mind stop racing with concerns and fears so that you can look around and start enjoying your life again.

In therapy, we will evaluate what negative thoughts are causing your emotions to skyrocket out of control. Then, I will help you think more positively and rationally to help stabilize your emotions.

Through careful examination of your thoughts, we will work together to make this emotional roller coaster stop, silencing your mind and teaching you ways to control your thoughts.

Think of our approach as using mind control but on yourself. How cool is that?

Therapy teaches you how to cope with your anxiety.

Instead of turning to unhealthy behaviors that are not effective, we will work on engaging in activities that reduce your feelings of anxiety.

You and I will create a detailed action plan to follow the next time you feel anxious. Most of what we will do consists of you doing the exact opposite of what your anxiety wants you to do! (Ha, take that anxiety!).

Successful attempts to engage in these anxiety-reducing techniques will cause you to feel empowered and show your anxiety who is boss! (You!)
